About Sketchy Notions ®
Sketchy Notions is a colorful and cheerful stationery and paper goods line based in Los Angeles, California.
Every Sketchy Notions product starts with a pencil sketch, hand-lettering and watercolor illustrations. Through our use (and hardcore love) of analog materials, we hope to help spread love and snail mail connections to everyone.
We're in love with plants, cats, snail mail and all things handmade, and we hope you love them too!
We aspire to create original artwork that spreads a little cheer, even on your gloomier days. We promise to work hard to bring you unique products that capture our love of analog mediums, snail mail, cats, plants and a few dogs along the way. We hope that our products will help you decorate your homes, bring cheer to your offices and daily lives, and to help build meaningful snail mail connections with your friends and family.
The TLDR: Chelsea Ward is an artist, author and art instructor who loves to watercolor. Her stationery business, Sketchy Notions, features her original illustrations and hand-lettering. Chelsea, who holds a BFA in studio art from University of Texas at Austin, also travels to teach art workshops and hosts annual retreats in Italy with her other business, Wanderful Retreats. She is the author of Modern Drawing, Your Year in Art, Modern Colored Pencil, and Art Made Easy: Easy Drawing (coming Fall 2022). Chelsea lives in Southern California with her husband, two cats and lots of plants.
Sketchy was established in 2011 by Chelsea Ward, a California native, plant lover, cat lady and travel addict. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a BFA in Studio Art, Chelsea and Sketchy flew off to Italy for 2 years to fill sketchbooks and create while abroad.
In 2012, she returned to California and started turning her sketches and paintings into prints and greeting cards. Sketchy Notions has since grown to a collection of over 100 card designs for various occasions, as well as a variety of colorful and cheerful paper goods and products.
Everything starts with original watercolors and hand-lettering before being edited, proofed, printed and packaged by Chelsea. Whatever isn't printed in our studio is produced in the United States. All our orders are lovingly packed by Chelsea, often while watching horror movies, listening to podcasts or dancing around the studio to monthly playlists that she shares with newsletter subscribers (along with free monthly coloring pages).
Chelsea is never lonely in the studio, the kitterns Ginger and Babka are constantly overseeing production and fulfillment of orders.
She is also the author of three instructional art books: Modern Drawing, Your Year in Art and Modern Colored Pencil. All three are published by Quarto and Walter Foster Publishing and are available on Amazon and at Barnes & Noble.
For many years, Chelsea also taught art classes for Arts Outreach, a non-profit that provides art, music and theater classes to schools in the Santa Ynez Valley. She has been involved with Arts Outreach since 2011 and is thrilled to be able to give back through the Art For You = Art For Kids print fundraiser.
